Welcome to The Kite Tales
Myanmar’s people in their own words
Created by two journalists to promote the voices of ordinary people in Myanmar, The Kite Tales began collecting stories from across this diverse country in 2016. That was the year a civilian government, led by Aung San Suu Kyi, finally took office after decades of oppressive military rule. But the army never fully let go of its clutch on the country and seized power again in 2021, launching a brutal crackdown and thrusting the country back into violence and isolation.
The Kite Tales has launched a fellowship to support journalists, artists and other creative professionals who have been targeted by the military since the coup, as well as continuing to seek out stories from ordinary people, either in the country or those forced to flee. You can read their stories here. We feel it is more crucial than ever now to go beyond the headlines and let the people talk about what they are going through.
